General election: The Scottish National Party seeks closer links with England and Europe

The SNP would seek to prevent a loss of flights to Scotland as part of Brexit negotations, while also seeking to improve links across the border to England.

The SNP manifesto today says its MPs would prioritise a commitment to the Open Skies Agreement in negotiations to leave the European Union and build on this with an expansion of international flights and protecting "vital" air connections to other parts of the UK. They would also work to improve surface transport connectivity, "including an Inverness Airport Rail Hub".

The manifesto also focuses on rail, saying that Scottish rail passengers have had a better deal on fares than those in the rest of the UK and that ScotRail, managed by the Scottish Government, "has worked in recent months to improve the punctuality of its service". It claims that "54% of ScotRail delays are caused by issues connected to Network Rail," which answers to the DfT in London. "SNP MPs will make a strong case for the full devolution of Network Rail so we can deliver a more effective and efficient rail service for Scotland," it adds.

The party also prioritises "engaging the UK Government in discussions on the feasibility of cross-border links, including linking Carlisle to the Borders Railway," and connecting HS2 to Scotland.
