Wandsworth Council has approved the design for the new London Underground station at Battersea Power Station, which is due to open in 2020.

This new tube link, which is being funded entirely by the area’s private sector developers, will serve existing local communities as well as those working and living at new developments in Nine Elms.

The council said that about 25,000 new jobs are being created at Nine Elms plus thousands of new homes including around 2,400 new affordable homes.

The station, designed by architects Grimshaw and Partners, will open onto Battersea Park Road. There will also be a western entrance at the southern end of the new High Street within the power station site.

A tunnel under Battersea Park Road will also link the new tube station directly to Stewarts Road.

Planning chairman Cllr Will Sweet said: “This is a momentous occasion in the ongoing story of Nine Elms. Bringing the Northern Line to Battersea has been a fundamental aim of the council for many years and a crucial part of the jigsaw that makes up the area’s regeneration.

“The arrival of tube services to this part of east Battersea will unlock the thousands of new jobs that are a key component of the area’s regeneration.

“The new station building looks world class and will be a fitting welcome to Nine Elms.”
