I have considerable respect for Jim Steer’s contributions to transport policy, but I must take issue with his panegyric for HS2 (‘Scrapping HS2 will delay benefits for North’ LTT 30 Aug).  

The heading of his article suggests that his main argument concerns the potential for rebalancing the UK’s economy (The heading was written by LTT?– Ed). He himself accepts that “the evidence from Europe on such effects is mixed”. In practice research in France...
