New estimates made of mortality from capital’s air pollution

Researchers have produced new estimates for the mortality impact of fine particulates and nitrogen dioxide

A frequently cited statistic in recent years has been that air pollution causes 9,400 deaths  in London each year. We shouldn’t be hearing that so much now, following the publication of new mortality estimates produced by Imperial College London’s Environmental Research Group (ERG) for the Greater London Authority and Transport for London.

The ERG estimates that in 2019 the equivalent of 3,600 to 4,100 deaths (61,800 to 70,200 life years lost) in the capital were attributable...
