We need to better maintain the cycle lanes we already have

I’m sorry to say this, but Rachel Smith is stating the blindingly obvious when she calls for wide segregated cycleways (ibid). If we could provide cycling super highways, as she suggests, then more people would cycle. The problem we face is that many of our cities are very densely populated and land is at a premium. I cannot think of anywhere in Britain where her preferred option of a seven metre-wide cycle lane could be sensibly implemented.

Perhaps the best opportunities are in rural...
