Bypass will ruin views of Ely cathedral, says English Heritage

English Heritage is to fight Cambridgeshire County Council’s plan to build a £31m (2014 prices) bypass for Ely, saying the road will cause “severe harm” to the setting of the city’s historic cathedral.

The 1.7km single carriageway bypass will take traffic away from the station area and enable the closure of the level crossing just to the north of the station. The crossing on the A142 is used by high-sided vehicles that are too big to use the adjacent underpass....
