In the ongoing discussions about HS2 and HS3 little has been said about the type of services and the destinations likely to be served by high-speed trains. Rail North has put forward a programme for how services in the North could be better connected but that needs to be seen in a wider geographical and economic context.

Let me paint a suggested network of ten services that involves high-speed trains:
