The North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA) covering Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland has been formally established. Its creation follows the collapse of a plan to elect a mayor to lead the North East Combined Authority (NECA) because of opposition from councils south of the Tyne. NECA continues to exist but covers only the four authorities south of the Tyne: Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland and Durham. A mayor will be elected to lead NTCA next May.
