The DfT this week announced a £20m fund to promote smart ticketing in the nine biggest urban areas outside London.
The funding, spread over 2009/10 and 2010/11, will be awarded to West Midlands, Tyne and Wear, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Merseyside, the Bristol area, Nottingham/shire and Leicester/shire.
The DfT is also to commission a study of a national pre-pay public transport product.
