After months of apprehension, the transport sector breathed a collective sigh of relief when the Comprehensive Spending Review was announced on October 20. Transport, always an easy target for budget cuts in times of fiscal retrenchment, had been told to prepare for a reduction of up to 40% in funding. However, when the big day came, it emerged that the Department for Transport will only have to reduce overall spending by 15% in real terms.
