Transport Secretary Philip Hammond kicked off a five-month consultation last week on the Government’s  high-speed rail strategy and the proposed first route between London and the West Midlands.

Under phase 1 of the Government’s plans, from 2026 passengers could be travelling at speeds of up to 225mph between London and Birmingham, cutting the journey time to 49 minutes – more than 30 minutes quicker than today.
