Across road, rail and bus, Baroness Thatcher’s legacy on transport policy has been divisive and long-lasting.

As Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher followed transport and planning policies that accelerated Britain’s journey into car reliance. Between 1975 and 1995, the annual number of journeys by car in the UK doubled while rail journeys remained static and bus travel declined by more than a third.
