Local authorities in the Bristol area are having to rethink plans to improve local rail services after Network Rail’s cost estimate for phase one of the MetroWest project jumped from £58m to £145m–£175m (both outturn costs, 2019 prices).

MetroWest phase one would see the Portishead branch in North Somerset re-opened, served by trains from Bristol, and higher frequencies on the Severn Beach and Bristol to Bath lines. It is being promoted by the four West of England...
