Cycling masterplans for Northern Ireland’s towns

05 September 2014

The Northern Ireland Executive is planning to develop cycling masterplans for urban areas, starting with Belfast.

The masterplans will identify proposals for new infrastructure as well as area-specific behaviour change initiatives.

The Executive’s new draft cycling strategy pledges more cycle facilities on main arterial routes; ‘quiet routes’ to promote cycling on less trafficked routes in urban areas; and ‘greenway’ off-road routes. New cycling design guidance is also promised.

The NI Executive is taking a cautious approach to signed-only 20mph limits. Five pilots are being implemented before a decision is made on wider roll-out.

Consultation closes on 21 November.
