Times calls for cleaner cars, Guardian calls for virtual abolition of cars

The problem of the pollution produced by the car featured prominently in the media in early March, with one prominent columnist calling for a rather more drastic solution than two leading politicians. Rik Thomas reports

On 5 March the chairs of two House of Commons select committees, Lilian Greenwood (the Labour chair of the transport committee) and Neil Parish (the Conservative chair of the environment, food and rural affairs committee), co-authored a ‘Red Box’ column in The Times which asserted that it is: “Time we taxed cars in proportion to how polluting they are.
